Prudence Crandall Museum

Description

National Historic Landmark and State Archaeological Preserve 1st academy for African-American women, 1833-4 Home/school of Connecticut's State Heroine. The museum includes period rooms, changing exhibits, a small research library (available by appointment for in-house study) and a gift shop. The museum's first floor is fully accessible.

History

The state of Connecticut purchased the property in 1969 with the intent of opening a public museum. This happened in May of 1984. Since then the Museum has become a National Historic Landmark, and Prudence Crandall has been designated as the state's official State Female Hero.

Artifact Collections

Collection of early 19th century furniture, paintings and decorative art.

Research Collections

Small research library open by appointment only, which includes either originals or duplicates of materials relating to Prudence Crandall, her academy, local history.
