Starting in early 2016, the Green County Historical Society, in cooperation with the State Historical Society Preservation Division, local groups and individuals, will begin the process of taking inventory of barns and other outbuildings located on the property.
Over recent years, the barns that once graced the rolling hills of Green County have been disappearing either from deterioration or from being torn down by their owners due lack of need. This is a trend that isn't just specific to Green County, but rather, it is an epidemic that is impacting rural locations throughout the nation. While preservationists recognize that not all buildings of historic merit can be saved, this project will fight to save representative examples so that present and future generations can visually experience these buildings and the life ways they represent.
The inventory project is modeled after one that was completed in Michigan. The project and involvement from the community will aid in the preservation process and allow the community residents to learn about architectural survey methods in an enjoyable community-service experience. If you have questions about the project or would like to volunteer to assist with the inventory of these buildings, please fill out the contact form on this page.
