The Newton County Historical Park & Museum is located in historic downtown Neosho, the county seat of Newton County, Missouri. It can be found at the corner of Washington & McCord Streets, a block north of the northeast corner of the square.
The park features an authentic 1840's log cabin, a restored 1870's rural schoolhouse, and our 1890's Newton County Sheriff's home - which also served as the sheriff's office and the county jail. This historic home has served as the Newton County's historical museum since the 1950's.
Our purpose and mission is to preserve the rich and diverse history of Newton County, Missouri and make it available for all to share.
The Newton County Historical Society welcomes everyone with a passion for history! Whether you're a lifelong resident, a recent newcomer, or just visiting, we offer a variety of ways to connect with the stories that have shaped Newton County.
Founded as the Newton County Museum Association in 1949 and incorporated as a Missouri non-for-profit organization in 1958, the Newton County Historical Society has served the entirety of Newton County and all historical resources, groups, and efforts within for over 75 years.
The Newton County Historical Society serves the community in part by hosting a variety of events and activities throughout the year -- from perennial favorites like our History Alley event in October, to developing programs like our Storytellers series, to collaborating with area parks and groups on their events, to ongoing efforts like hosting school groups and walk-in guests.
